According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/credit-cards\/news\/financial-fraud-survey\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com#key-insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bankrate\u2019s fraud survey<\/a>, 89% of people took concrete steps last year to protect themselves &#8211; updating passwords, enabling two\u2011factor authentication,&nbsp;monitoring&nbsp;accounts, shredding documents, and avoiding suspicious links.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, despite this unprecedented level of personal vigilance, 1 in 3 Americans was still&nbsp;scammed&nbsp;in that same&nbsp;12 month&nbsp;period. Worse, 37% of those victims lost money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the paradox at the heart of today\u2019s financial ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers are doing more.&nbsp;<br>Fraudsters are doing more.&nbsp;<br>But the infrastructure&nbsp;inbetween&nbsp;&#8211; the systems that govern account access, data sharing, and third\u2011party connectivity &#8211;&nbsp;hasn\u2019t&nbsp;kept pace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where open banking, open finance, and modern risk management come sharply into focus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The real problem&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;consumer behaviour &#8211;&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;systemic exposure<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When 68% of Americans have experienced a financial&nbsp;scam&nbsp;at some point in their lives,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;not a story about individual responsibility.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a story about structural risk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every new fintech app, data aggregator, payment initiator, and financial service provider introduces a new connection point &#8211; and with it, a new vulnerability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the part of the story that rarely makes headlines: most fraud risk now sits in the seams between institutions, aggregators, and third\u2011party providers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s&nbsp;why third-party risk is no longer an operational concern.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a strategic one &#8211; and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;central to the future of Open Finance Risk Management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open finance needs a new risk model<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open banking promised secure, permissioned data sharing. Open finance expands that promise &#8211; but also expands the attack surface.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bankrate numbers make the case clearly:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1 in 3 Americans were targeted successfully even after taking protective measures&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly half&nbsp;of&nbsp;previous&nbsp;victims expect to be targeted again&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Young people (who are more likely to use apps etc) are at least as vulnerable as older ones)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraudsters are exploiting the weakest link in the chain &#8211; and&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;rarely the consumer. This is why the next phase of Open Finance requires a more robust, ecosystem\u2011level approach to third-party risk management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What modern Open Finance Risk Management looks like<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect consumers and rebuild trust, the ecosystem needs:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Standardised accreditation of third\u2011party providers<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; only trusted, verified organisations should be able to gain access to customer accounts and financial data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Dynamic monitoring of risk indicators<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 near real\u2011time detection of anomalies, behavioural risk signals, and suspicious patterns across third\u2011party connections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Insurance\u2011backed warranty model<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 a tangible safeguard that reduces risk between banks and&nbsp;fintechs, turning assurance into something measurable, not theoretical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consumers&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;solve this alone.&nbsp;<br>Banks&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;solve it alone.&nbsp;<br>Aggregators&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;solve it alone.&nbsp;<br>Fintechs&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;solve it alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the ecosystem can &#8211; with Open Finance Risk Management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The takeaway<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When 9 out of 10 people are working hard to protect themselves and 1 in 3 still gets scammed, the conclusion is obvious:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fraud is no longer a personal problem.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;an ecosystem problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And ecosystem problems require ecosystem solutions &#8211; ones that&nbsp;identify&nbsp;and exclude bad actors&nbsp;<em>before<\/em>&nbsp;they can erode trust and confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.invela.com\/?page_id=27\">Let&#8217;s Talk<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans are more vigilant than ever.
